Skin patch testing is a safe and effective way to diagnose skin allergies. It is a simple procedure that can be done in a doctor's office or allergy clinic. During a skin patch test, small amounts of allergens are applied to patches and placed on the patient's back. The patches are left in place for 48 hours, and then the patient returns to the doctor's office to have them removed and examined. If the patient is allergic to any of the allergens, they will develop a reaction at the patch site. This reaction may be a rash, redness, itching, or swelling.
